A tragedy struck Clinton County on Saturday evening when a suspected drunk driver ploughed into a group of pedestrians, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to more than a dozen others.

Authorities responded to the incident around 6:30 pm at the intersection of South Waucousta Road and Corrison Road in Watertown Township, just northwest of Lansing.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 35-year-old drunk driver from Perrinton drove into pedestrians who were walking on the shoulder of South Waucousta.

The vehicle fled the scene, but deputies apprehended the driver several miles away and took her into custody. Unfortunately, two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that 13 other individuals, ranging from toddlers to senior citizens, were transported to the hospital with injuries varying from minor to life-threatening. Emergency services worked diligently to provide immediate care and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The suspected drunk driver’s name has not been disclosed, and no charges have been filed yet as the investigation continues.

In the wake of the incident, the community is left grappling with the shock and sorrow of the tragic event as law enforcement officials urge anyone with information to come forward.
